Handloom
Handloom is considered as a traditional sector in India. The handloom industry was also one of the assets of the freedom fighters. They produced and wore handloom garments, showing their non dependence on the British apparel. Today, handlooms represent an important crafted product and comprise the largest cottage industry of the country. Thus government of India also gives a special attention to this sector. Apart from accounting for a quarter of the cloth production in India, handloom also provides employment to over 3 million people. For the people living in rural areas, weaving on small looms is generally carried on as a subsidiary occupation to agriculture. More than 60 percent of those weavers are women. Assam, Tripura, Manipur and other north-eastern states and union territories are the regions where handloom is a means of living for the women.
